Not being flippant — a meaningful share of the calls we take end with the customer finding the key while we are still driving over, and we would rather that happened before you paid for anything.
If the key is genuinely gone and it was the only one, stop searching and start the clock. Nothing gets cheaper by waiting, and if the key is lost somewhere public there is an argument for erasing it from the car sooner rather than later.

With no working key to start from, we work backwards from the VIN. That gets us the factory cut code and the correct blank.
